Department of Mathematics

Welcome to the Mathematics Department

The Mathematics Department was established in 1973 at Tarbiat Moallem University, initially admitting students in the secondary school mathematics education track, and quickly emerged as one of the leading departments in the university. In 1989, the department began admitting students at the bachelor's and master's levels in the fields of pure mathematics and applied mathematics. Following the merger of Tarbiat Moallem University and the University of Sistan and Baluchestan in 1992, the department was transferred to the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Sistan and Baluchestan. In 2003, with the establishment of the Faculty of Mathematics, the department was moved to this new faculty. In 2001, it started admitting PhD students in pure mathematics, and in 2008 in applied mathematics. In 2018, the Faculty of Mathematics was renamed the Faculty of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science. Currently, the Mathematics Department admits students at the master's and PhD levels in the tracks of mathematical analysis, algebra, geometry and topology, numerical analysis, and optimization. The department presently has 23 full-time faculty members, as listed below.

In addition, more than 10 visiting professors—typically faculty members from other institutions or experienced and competent high school teachers with a PhD in mathematics—assist the Mathematics Department in delivering targeted and impactful educational programs. Beyond offering a wide range of specialized courses across all academic levels in mathematics, the department provides numerous inter-departmental courses to other faculties. On average, each semester, the department handles approximately 120 credit hours of inter-departmental courses in various faculties such as basic sciences, engineering, and economics, with about half taught by full-time faculty members and the other half by experienced visiting instructors. Given the nature of mathematics as the most applicable and influential science in the world, the Mathematics Department at the University of Sistan and Baluchestan, like many mathematics departments worldwide, ranks among the most capable and hardworking academic units in the university.

In addition to educational activities, the department excels in research and scholarly endeavors, making it one of the most successful and capable groups at the university. Its key strength lies in conducting research at a world-class level. The department takes pride in publishing a large number of scientific articles in reputable and influential domestic and international journals, as well as producing various educational and research books through prestigious domestic and international publishers. The primary asset of the Mathematics Department is its talented faculty members in both teaching and research, combined with the fundamental and global nature of the discipline. The table below presents the current number of students in the Mathematics Department, broken down by academic level.
