About Sistan and Baluchestan University

University of Sistan and Baluchestan , founded in 1974, is a comprehensive university offering students from the province, nation, and the neighboring countries a high quality education by providing learning experiences designed to develop intellectual abilities, as well as social, moral, cultural, and ethical values. By doing so, the students will be equipped with the skills, insights, attitudes and practical experiences that will enable them to become fully qualified for their chosen professions in the workplace and social services to their communities.

It did not take long for the university to expand to a level to be able to give birth to three independent universities. These include former USB’s Faculty of Agriculture (University of Zabol; founded in 1998), former USB’s Faculty of Nautical Science in Chabahar (Chabahar University of Nautical Science; founded in 2002), and the Iranshahr Higher Education Complex, founded in 2008 (former USB’s Faculty of Humanities at Iranshahr).

University of Sistan and Baluchestan today boasts an enrollment of more than 20,000 from all over the country. More than half of our students are non-Sistan and Baluchestan residents. With an acceptable student-faculty ratio, instructors are able to work closely with students, encourage ambition, and challenge students to meet their academic success.

In 2005, the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology has ranked the University of Sistan and Baluchestan as one of Iran’s “Developed Universities”, based on an index formulated from 26 criteria for evaluation (Rank A – Group G). The University is a member of the following organizations and associations: The International Association of Universities (IAU), OIC Standing Committee on Science and Technology (COMSTECH), and the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in South Asia (COMSTAS). In recent years, USB was the nation’s number one producer of locally trained scholars. Currently, USB offers 135 degree programs including 135 Bachelors’, 54 Masters’, and 21 Doctoral courses of study. One joint PhD program with University of Peshawar, Pakistan, in Geology has been initiated in September 2008. Another joint PhD program with the University of Uppsala, Sweden, is also under consideration and is expected to start soon.

The USB football team plays in Division 1 level of College Students Football League (CSFL).

USB has launched an extensive development program that, in addition to the lately opened Faculty buildings, includes an almost completed 7 story library, and the new 14,000 square meter Faculty of Science building. The University also recently completed the first of the three phases of dormitory renovations, endorsed by His Excellency, the Leader of the Nation, which will transform current dormitories into more suitable places for living and study. More expansions to the University’s IT are planned. The International Branch of USB at Chabahar is the most recent development program which came into reality.

University of Sistan and Baluchestan has come far from the early days in its distinguished history as a single Faculty of Engineering and a Teachers’ Training School. It continues to build upon its proud legacy. For faculty, staff, students, alumni, and supporters “Sistan and Baluchestan Spirit” is alive and dominant – and if the current growth and progress are any indication, that spirit will live on for generations to come.
